Konkani Chicken Recipe

Recipe of the week 🙂
The dish is a traditional Konkani recipe, which has a very strong aroma.
Konkani chicken is a special spicy chicken dish, cooked in spicy gravy of Konkani masala.
Konkani chicken was my Sunday special recipe with vegetable pulao.
So let’s begin…

Konkani Chicken Recipe

Prep time             : 15 minutes
Cooking time      : 20 minutes
Total time             : 35 minutes

1/2 Kg chicken
1 Teaspoon red chili powder
1/2 Teaspoon turmeric powder
1 Tablespoon oil
Salt to taste

To grind:

1 Cup desiccated coconut
2 Large sized onion – finely chopped
1 Tablespoon chopped ginger and garlic
4-5 Peppercorns
2 Cloves
1 Inch cinnamon
1 Cardamom
1 Tablespoon oil


  • Wash chicken pieces thoroughly under running water.
  • Take a pan and add oil. When oil is heated enough add chopped onion, ginger, garlic, salt, peppercorns, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. Sauté until transparent.
  • Add in the desiccated coconut and brown the masala. (Make sure you don’t burn the masala).
  • Cool it and then grind it to fine paste adding water and keep it aside.


  • Now, in a same pan heat oil and add in the washed chicken pieces, turmeric powder and red chili powder. Sauté and cook for few minutes.
  • Add in the ground paste into the chicken and cook with the lid on for 8- 10 minutes.
  • After about 8 -10 minutes, open the lid and check the consistency. Add some water and mix.
  • Switch off the flame and garnish it with cilantro.

Enjoy the dish with vegetable pulao or chapati.
