Gujarati Dal

Gujarati dal is famous for its spicy, sweet and sour taste. It is healthy, and you can have it on everyday basis. It has thin consistency but it is full of flavors. Gujarati dal is made with toor dal and is slightly sweet & sour due to the addition of jaggery and lemon juice. The tomatoes also add a lot of flavor to the dal.

Gujarati dal is best with steamed rice accompanied with pickle and vegetable stir-fry.

1 Cup toor dal
1 Small size tomato
1/2 Teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 Teaspoon cumin powder
1/4 Teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 Teaspoon red chili powder
1/2 Teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 Teaspoon mustard seeds
2 Tablespoons jaggery
Pinch of asafoetida
2 Dried red chilies
2-3 Kokum
1” Piece cinnamon
2 Cloves
1/2 Lemon
Curry leaves
Salt to taste
1 Tablespoon oil


  • Wash toor dal thoroughly with water at least for 3 times.
  • Pressure cook the dal for 4-5 whistles, and then churn it using a hand blender.
  • Finely chop tomatoes.


  • Heat oil in pan and splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon and cloves. Add in the dried red chilies, curry leaves and asafoetida.
  • Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder and cumin powder and salt. Sauté and cook for 4-5 minutes.
  • Then add the churned dal, kokum and water. Mix everything well.
  • Add jaggery and allow the dal to boil for 5-6 minutes on a low flame.
  • Garnish with cilantro and squeeze half a lemon.
  • Serve hot with steamed rice, pickle and vegetable stir-fry.
