Cherupayar Curry / Green Gram Curry – Kerala Style

Green gram is very healthy and nutritious. It is a great source of fiber and protein. We can prepare cherupayar curry in many ways; I remember in my previous recipe I used coconut, where in this recipe I am using minimum ingredients. You can check my previous post here Green Moong Dal/ Green Gram Recipe. It is very easy to prepare and can be accompanied with rice and roti.

Cherupayar Curry / Green Gram Curry – Kerala Style

Prep time           : 10 minutes
Cooking time    : 15 minutes
Total time          : 25 minutes

1 Cup green gram /cherupayar
1 Teaspoon red chili powder
1/2 Teaspoon turmeric powder
1 to 1.5 Cups of water
Salt to taste

For seasoning:

1 Teaspoon mustard seeds
2 Dried red chilies
2-3 Shallots
1 Tablespoon coconut oil
Curry leaves


  • Wash and soak green gram for 6-7 hours. Pressure cook with enough water and little salt for 3 whistles.


  • Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
  • Add dried red chilies, curry leaves, shallots and salt. Sauté until golden brown.
  • Then add turmeric powder and red chili powder. Sauté for few minutes.
  • Transfer the cooked green gram and mix well. Then add 1 cup of water. Simmer and cook on low flame for 4-5 minutes.

Serve hot and enjoy!
