Kerala parippu

Parippu curry is a traditional dish of Kerala which is also a part of Onam sadhya. The Kerala style parippu curry tastes delicious with hot red rice and pappadams topped with ghee.

1 Cup Cheruparippu-Moong dal (split yellow variety)
Salt to taste

For grinding:

1/4 Grated coconut
0.5 Teaspoon cumin seeds (Jeeragam)
3 Green chillies
2 Shallots
3-4 Garlic
0.5 Teaspoon turmeric powder


1 Medium chopped onion
0.5 Cup tomato
2 Green chillies finely chopped
0.5 Teaspoon mustard seeds
2 Dried red chilli
Few curry leaves
1 Tablespoon coconut oil


Grind grated coconut, green chilli, garlic cloves, shallots, cumin seeds and turmeric powder to a smooth paste. Keep it aside.


  1. Wash and pressure cook dal with enough water adding salt. Cook for 2-4 whistles until done and Mash it well.
  2. In a pan heat coconut oil and add mustard seeds, when it splutters add dried red chillies, curry leaves and sauté for a few seconds.
  3. Then, add finely chopped onion, chopped green chillies and tomatoes. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
    (Add salt if needed)
  4. Now add the ground coconut paste with little bit of water . Mix well and add the cooked dal. Cook for another 5-6 minutes.

Enjoy with hot rice topped with ghee.
